How does a remote control actually work?

The remote has an infrared LED that sends out pulses of invisible light. A photo-diode in the receiver detects these pulses. The pulses are a little like Morse code. If the correct codes are detected, the receiving unit executes your command.

I want to give my a cuzin a gift a remote control gift so what should i get him. First of all i have that remote and thats a stupid answer cuz why would i gift that and especially to a kid.

I recently installed a webcam in one room of my house to check on my cats when traveling, which works great except when its dark. It just so happens that the ceiling light in that room has an on/off remote control. Since I have a wireless LAN network in the house, I'm wondering if there's any device available that would allow me to remotely control that remote control to turn it on/off in order to illuminate the room.

you can't just get an outlet timer and plug a lamp in it? maybe a blacklight so that the kitties can rave?
